Raipur 24 December 2024: The Heart, Chest and Vascular Surgery Department of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Smriti Hospital has achieved a major achievement by removing a mediastinal tumor weighing about five kilograms stuck to the lungs and heart of a 52-year-old woman. The surgery is also important because if the surgeon’s team did not remove this cancerous tumor carefully, there could be a risk of injury to the vital organs of the body, heart and lungs. Thanks to the skilled surgeon team of Ambedkar Hospital, after this complex surgery, the patient recovered and was discharged from the hospital. Health Minister Shri Shyam Bihari Jaiswal has congratulated the Ambedkar Hospital management for successfully completing such a difficult surgery. He has said that very soon the facility of open heart surgery and coronary bypass surgery will also be available to the people.
A 52-year-old woman reached Ambedkar Hospital with a complaint of difficulty in breathing in the Heart, Chest and Vascular Surgery Department of Ambedkar Hospital. After CT scan and other tests, it was found that the patient had a very large tumor inside the chest and attached to the heart. The patient’s condition was so bad that she was not able to breathe properly, so she was kept on a high pressure (bipap) ventilator. The tumor was so big that it had pressed the heart and shifted it to another part and the windpipe along with the lungs were also pressed. The patient was refused surgery in other institutions. As per the plan, this tumor was successfully removed with the joint efforts of the team of cancer surgeon Dr. Ashutosh Gupta and heart and chest surgeon Dr. Krishnakant Sahu. During this operation, the heart lung machine was also prepared and kept in standby mode because if due to any reason the heart or pulmonary artery gets injured, then the machine would provide support.
The tumor weighed about five kilograms. Later, after a biopsy, it was found that it was a malignant tumor called sarcoma, which is a very dangerous tumor. After recovery, the patient was sent to the cancer department for chemotherapy.
